Well done for another great week, Year 5.

This week has been assessment week. The children have completed 6 assessments: Arithmetic, Reasoning A, Reasoning B, Spelling, GPS and Reading. The children have shown good resilient as always during a busy week, and have worked hard at their assessments. Some of them have shown great progress since the beginning of the school year.

We also had Sport's Day today! The children's penultimate one at Brady. They had an excellent afternoon in the heat, and participated well in the various events. Well done all!

This week we also had a Science lesson exploring comparison skills, continuing with our British Science Week topic of 'Curiosly Close'. The children compared different objects in the classroom and thought about their size relative to one another. The showed some good working scientifically skills.

In addition, we completed our Geography lesson looking at contour lines on OS maps, as well as map swuare grids. These are difficult filedwork skills, but the children did a great job of using their prior knowledge from our last lesson, as well as skills learnt in year 4, to help them complete their work. All of the children now show great confidence when reading maps and explaining key elements of map reading.

Just a reminder, next week is Stubbers! The children will be in school as normal on Monday and Tuesday, and on Wednesday they must be dropped at Stubbers at 12:30 with a packed lunch, ready for the trip to begin! Please refer to the parent letter pack to ensure that you child has all the correct items packed for the trip, as well as referring to the weather forecast beforehand.

If your child is not attending Stubbers, they must still attend school as normal on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The children will be given a separate timetable for how their days will be spent at school.

Any questions, please just ask one of us at the door :) Happy weekend!

Year 5, Summer 2 Week 2

Well done to Year 5 for another amazing week.

In English, we have continued exploring Myths and Legends. The children had the opportunity to edit a WABOOL, allowing them to put their editing skills to the test. They have also planned and written the first draft of their own Myth or Legend.

In Reading, we have continued with our class text, Treason. This week, we have been focusing on our retrieval and prediction skills, such as predicting what might happen next in a chapter. The children have shared some thoughtful and imaginative ideas.

In Maths, we have concluded our negative numbers topic. We focused on comparing and ordering negative numbers, as well as finding the difference between two numbers. The children performed well on the end-of-unit test. We finished the week by completing a pre-assessment for our new unit on converting units.

The children were very lucky this week and enjoyed a performance from "Miles the Mole" where they learnt all about Air Quality and Pollution.

We also finished the week by making and eating tzatziki with pittas to celebrate Healthy Eating Week.

Just a reminder that next week is Assessment Week for Year 5, and Sports Day will take place on Friday afternoon.

Please also remember that children should be reading at least five times a week and regularly practising on TTRS.

Year 5 Summer 2 Week 1
5/06/2026 3:45 PM

Well done for a great first week back, Year 5- we are in our final half term!

This week, in Maths, we concluded our topic on Decimals. Our final lesson looked at multiplying and dividing decimals with missing values. We then moved onto our newtopic exploring Negative Numbers. To begin our topic, we looked at physical objects which use negative numbers, such as thermometers. To helped the children to understand what negative numbers are and use them in context.

In English, we began a new unit, preparing to write a Myth or Legend. We looked at WAGOLLs of book genres, and the children were able to spot key grammatical features within them. We also recapped using cohesive devices in our writing, to ensure that both our sentences and paragraphs link seamlessly.

For Geography, we also began our new unit 'Investigating our World'. Our first lesson consisted of us using OS maps, and exposing the children to the different features on there- many hadn't used one before! We looked at grid references, contour lines and many more features. We discussed how the children could use maps outside of school, and this helped to build on their fieldwork skills.

Have a lovely weekend, don't forget to read 5-7 times per week at home, as well as using TTRS. We are back to swimming on Tuesday 9th June.
