Year 5 Summer 2 Week 5

Well done for another great week, Year 5. The children did a great job of getting back into routine after our trip to Stubbers last week!

In English, we began a new unit on Performance Poetry. We have looked at different poems, such as Chocolate Cake by Michael Rosen, and different techniques that we would use when we are reading these poems aloud. One particular feature was actions, which the children used lots of when performing that particular poem! It has been wonderful to see thier confidence blossom when performing in front of an audience.

For Maths, we concluded our topic on Converting Units. This has been one of the trickier topics, and the children have not been as confident in using these skills. We will ensure to recap on this topic on our last week of term, and it will be a focus on learning in Year 6. Next week, we will begin our final Maths unit of Year 5, which is Volume.

In Geography, we learned all about human geography, and looked at data from around the world. The children compared data from the 7 different continents, including literacy rates and life expectancy. They drew some interesting conclusions from the data, including noticing that the lower the literacy rate, the lower the wealth of the continent too.

Happy weekend, please don't forget to visit TTRS and to read at least 5 times at home every week :)

Year 5 Summer 2 Week 3
19/06/2026 3:45 PM

Well done for another great week, Year 5.

This week has been assessment week. The children have completed 6 assessments: Arithmetic, Reasoning A, Reasoning B, Spelling, GPS and Reading. The children have shown good resilient as always during a busy week, and have worked hard at their assessments. Some of them have shown great progress since the beginning of the school year.

We also had Sport's Day today! The children's penultimate one at Brady. They had an excellent afternoon in the heat, and participated well in the various events. Well done all!

This week we also had a Science lesson exploring comparison skills, continuing with our British Science Week topic of 'Curiosly Close'. The children compared different objects in the classroom and thought about their size relative to one another. The showed some good working scientifically skills.

In addition, we completed our Geography lesson looking at contour lines on OS maps, as well as map swuare grids. These are difficult filedwork skills, but the children did a great job of using their prior knowledge from our last lesson, as well as skills learnt in year 4, to help them complete their work. All of the children now show great confidence when reading maps and explaining key elements of map reading.

Just a reminder, next week is Stubbers! The children will be in school as normal on Monday and Tuesday, and on Wednesday they must be dropped at Stubbers at 12:30 with a packed lunch, ready for the trip to begin! Please refer to the parent letter pack to ensure that you child has all the correct items packed for the trip, as well as referring to the weather forecast beforehand.

If your child is not attending Stubbers, they must still attend school as normal on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The children will be given a separate timetable for how their days will be spent at school.

Any questions, please just ask one of us at the door :) Happy weekend!

Year 5, Summer 2 Week 2

Well done to Year 5 for another amazing week.

In English, we have continued exploring Myths and Legends. The children had the opportunity to edit a WABOOL, allowing them to put their editing skills to the test. They have also planned and written the first draft of their own Myth or Legend.

In Reading, we have continued with our class text, Treason. This week, we have been focusing on our retrieval and prediction skills, such as predicting what might happen next in a chapter. The children have shared some thoughtful and imaginative ideas.

In Maths, we have concluded our negative numbers topic. We focused on comparing and ordering negative numbers, as well as finding the difference between two numbers. The children performed well on the end-of-unit test. We finished the week by completing a pre-assessment for our new unit on converting units.

The children were very lucky this week and enjoyed a performance from "Miles the Mole" where they learnt all about Air Quality and Pollution.

We also finished the week by making and eating tzatziki with pittas to celebrate Healthy Eating Week.

Just a reminder that next week is Assessment Week for Year 5, and Sports Day will take place on Friday afternoon.

Please also remember that children should be reading at least five times a week and regularly practising on TTRS.
