Reception Newsletter

Mrs Divall - 05 Jan 2016

 Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome Back and Happy New Year 2016!  We hope you had a great holiday and your children are ready for some new learning over the next few weeks.
Our topic for this short half term is called ‘Winter creatures and celebrations’.  We’ll be using these weekly books or themes to learn in the afternoons.  We’ll be doing activities related to Expressive Arts and Design, Understanding the World, Religious Education and Physical Education that are linked to these themes in the afternoons.  For example, we will role play ‘We’re going on a bear hunt’ and we will freeze water to explore ice, we will prepare toppings for pancakes.

04.01.16 -  The Penguin and the Pinecone
11.01.16 – Arctic Animals
18.01.16 – Owl babies
25.01.16 -  We’re Going on a Bear Hunt
01.02.16 -  Mama Panya’s Pancakes/Mr Wolf’s pancakes
08.02.16 – Chinese New year

In the mornings, we will continue to enjoy our literacy and maths activities. We usually have assembly at 9 o’clock, so when we get back, we sit as a class for a whole class maths lesson for about 10 minutes.  We then have four activities to complete over the next hour.  Two will be with an adult (myself or Miss Hopkins) focussed on developing our mathematical understanding and two will be a more open ended independent activity. Children will have the opportunity to have a drink and a snack, then they will go out to play with the rest of the school between 10-45 and 11.  After play, we all come back into Reception class and have our group phonics lessons and choosing time so that we are ready just in time for lunch!

Reading books will be changed once per week during phonics sessions.  Please make sure your child has their book and reading record every day!

It is very important that you remember to return your child’s PE Kit into school this week.  They must have a pair of plimsolls that fit (some were getting to small and strangely some were way too big!) a Brady PE top and shorts.  Some of our PE lessons will be outside, so if you would like to you can include a pair of dark plain jogging bottoms and/or jumper.

Lots of children have got used to having milk at snack time but please remember this was only free until your child turned 5.  If your child would like milk, please make sure you order it and pay for it on the Cool Milk website, as we do not have enough milk for the amount of children who want it and this causes them some distress!  If your child is not going to have milk then please send them in with a bottle or flask or water (or very weak squash) that they can drink at snack time.  We do always have a water jug and cups available if your child forgets.

There will be no school trip this half term, but next half term we are hoping to go to Tesco’s when we learn about healthy food.  We will invite you into school to try our pancakes and we will also be leading a class assembly so as soon as those dates are confirmed I will let you know.  Lastly, I am having an operation scheduled for the 19th January and I will not be in school for a few days as I recover.  Mr Bishop will arrange an Early Years trained supply teacher to support Miss Hopkins while I am recovering and I hope to be back as quickly as possible!

Kind Regards,
Mrs Divall
